From an engineering standpoint, most technicians can see the logic behind module-to-module communication. In theory, it makes sense to have a single input such as a vehicle speed sensor feed just one module, and then have that module share the information over a pair of data bus wires to other modules. Unfortunately for the technicians faced with the challenge of diagnosing and repairing these problems, module-to-module communication often makes our job significantly more difficult.

TPMS service: $657 million in sales
Independent tire dealers in the United States performed more than 7 million tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) service jobs representing $657 million in sales in 2009. The 2009-2010 Modern Tire Dealer Automotive Service Survey breaks down TPMS service work per store. The service, which was performed by 80% of the respondents, represents 3.8% of all automotive service dollars. (Automotive service accounts for 41% of the average tire dealer's sales volume.)
